This will examine John James Audubon’s brief, but impactful sojourn at Oakley Plantation. Utilizing the Museum, Oakley House and nature trails we will briefly trace Audubon’s trajectory from his birth on a Caribbean sugar plantation, to his arrival in America and, eventually, West Feliciana. Four generations of women owned and operated Oakley House in what was otherwise considered to be a man's world. At the same time, the generations of African American women who served them fought to create and maintain their own identities. In this guided experience, you will get a behind the scenes look at both lineages of resilient women. Wander the halls and explore the very rooms where female empowerment bred and hear the intimate stories that you won't hear anywhere else.

The park commemorates the 1810 West Florida Rebellion during a day of activities from 10 AM until 3 PM. These activities include demonstrations of weapons and uniforms of the time and brief talks in camp on Oakley Plantations role in the September uprising. THE EARLY YEARS OF A FELICIANA PLANTATION 1 PM & 3 PM Here we focus on the origins of Oakley Plantation, beginning with the arrival in the parish of Ruffin and Lucretia Gray, and their twenty enslaved workers. This is the story of the free and enslaved people of an early Oakley Plantation and how they wrested and developed lands from the wild to create one of the largest and wealthiest plantations in Louisiana. Audubon State Historic Site remembers the contributions of its own founder who fought in the Revolutionary War in Louisiana, the morning of activities centered around the sights and sounds of the 1779 campaign for Baton Rouge. Throughout the morning, black powder demonstrations of both cannon and flintlock will be presented along with talks on uniforms and camp life. Various other period demonstrations around the park grounds will be included. Pre-registration required.
10AM-3PM Audubon State Historic Site remembers the contributions of its own founder who fought the Revolutionary War in Louisiana. Two days of programs centered around the sights and sounds of the campaign. This weekend the park presents the Revolutionary War in Louisiana for our adult audiences and families. Preregistered students will learn about Christmas traditions in Colonial America. Wassailing, hunting for Christmas dinner, period games, and the origins of Christmas traditions are just some of the things students will experience. There will be Black powder weapon hunting demonstrations along hristmas traditions of Jane Austen, wassail, period games, and more. Preregistration is required. On Saturday night, the plantation comes to life during the holidays as it shows off its seasonal decorations. Costumed guides accompany the visitors in a trip into the past through the candlelit Oakley House. Take a taste of what’s cooking in the kitchen, or just enjoy our yearly Christmas dance, music by the Lagniappe Dulcimers. Chestnuts will be roasting and wassail served.
