With a large number of tours associated with American Cruise Line, Tauck River Cruises, and Viking Cruises, the staff can use volunteers to help with programs, weeding and planting gardens, or doing any number of things at the site.

Four generations of women owned and operated Oakley House in what was otherwise considered to be a man's world. At the same time, the generations of African American women who served them fought to create and maintain their own identities. In this guided experience, you will get a behind the scenes look at both lineages of resilient women. Wander the halls and explore the very rooms where female empowerment bred and hear the intimate stories that you won't hear anywhere else.
Explore open hearth cooking in the early 1800's at Audubon State Historic Site. Costumed interpreters will be using period techniques, equipment, and recipes to demonstrate just how much effort it took to create the meals of yesterday. Children may explore the world of John Audubon's pet hawk at Oakley Plantation in 1821. Along the way they will create a bird craft, make wildlife feeders to hang around the park and see where Nero lived along with take home the new coloring book on Nero at Oakley. What clues to the past lie just beneath your feet? And why are archaeologists so crazy about pottery anyway?! Join us for a day dedicated to the archaeology of Oakley Plantation. An experienced archaeologist will guide you through a recreated dig carefully modeled after the actual excavations. Learn the significance of the site and methods used for excavating, you will be able to sift the dirt, map the site, and discover the forgotten lives of Oakley. Preregistration is required.
Locust Grove plantation once owned by Luther Smith and Anna Davis Smith, sister of Jefferson Davis, became the final resting place for many figures important in the early history of Louisiana. Experience history through figures like Sarah Knox Taylor, the daughter of President Zachary Taylor and shortlived wife of Jefferson Davis, who died at Locust Grove Plantation. See the grave of Major General Eleazar Ripley, one of the earliest generals of the young country.
Come to Audubon State Historic Site and follow the paths where John James Audubon once walked in 1821 during an extended guided tour. At 10 AM and 2 PM guests meet in the theater of the Interpretive Center. Please allow two hours for the entire presentation. There is a great deal of walking on various surfaces and stair climbing so comfortable footwear is recommended.
This program will focus on Louisiana during the time of The War of 1812. Focusing on Oakley during this time. Activities will include lawn and parlor games. Learn about and see a duel between gentlemen and their seconds as well as how the local doctor and apothecary healed those sick and injured. The Civil War at Oakley Plantation Reenactment and Living History. This is an exciting opportunity to experience the drama and history of the American Civil War in a unique way as we recreate the October 1864 Battle that took place across the park. Visitors will observe firsthand how soldiers trained for battle and observe activities such as artillery drills, musket firing demonstrations, infantry drills, medicine and more!
